The Centre for
Studies on Science (CSOS) was founded in 1981 with the cooperation and
coordination of some young scientists who were actively associated with
the scientific research and intellectual activities in various parts
of India. Aligarh being prominent as an educational habitat of many
Indians was chosen as the venue of the newly founded institution.
CSOS serves to encourage and cooperate in research and studies
aiming to discover, synthesize and contemporarize faith based intellectual
tradition in experimental science and technology and disciplines such
as, philosophy and sociology of science, history of science and science
policy making etc. This type of research and study was considered essential
for following reasons.
-
Being committed to recently the scientists are duty bound to seek
guidance from every possible source of truth including in script work
in academic and intellectual affairs including scientific activities
and formation of scientific theories and concepts.
-
Increasing
realization of many thinkers of the fallacies of the civilizational
foundation of the assumptions on which modern scientific tradition
is based as manifest in current crises in philosopho-scientific thoughts,
mounting criticism on the socio-political connection of science and
technology and its image as a vehicle of terror and violence can in
no way be overlooked. Every conscience keeper is duty bound to develop
and present to the modern man an alternative model of science and
technology and help remedy the problems daunting the modern mind.
-
Man today being presently working
to reach for new alternatives and questioning the present aspirations
and goals should endeavour to look afresh on its own past intellect
heritage.
-
Scientific and technological thinking
is at present undergoing a re-examination in the western world. Factors
previously considered outside the domain of science and technology
such as social, cultural and ethical, are now being introduced into
it.
-
Rediscovering and reunderstanding
of the scientific and technological tradition of every community is necessary for
its survival and healthy growth, as it helps people get free from intellectual colonization.
These were the reasons and objectives which facilitated
the foundation of the Centre for Studies on Science. Brief introduction
of its aim, organizational structure and activities follows. |
